Well here we are. Term time is over, along with the midweek peace and quiet, and at some point you’re going to have to think about getting ready for September. New uniforms, new stationery, new sports kit and of course, brand new school shoes.
This is where The Golden Boot comes in – having been the UK’s largest independent shoe shop since 1790, we’ve got this.
Getting properly fitted school shoes is important. There’s no other way around it. Children must spend an average of 30 hours per week in these shoes, so making sure they fit well and are comfortable, will result in lots of healthy, happy feet.
Every single member of staff on the shop floor has been professionally trained to fit shoes. They’re able to recognise certain characteristics of your children’s feet and recommend the best shoes for them. The brands and styles on offer are extensive, giving parents and children plenty to choose from. They’re all made from the best quality leather, ensuring the shoes will soften sufficiently and feet can breathe.
If you want to check out the styles we have, then take a look at thegoldenboot.co.uk. It can be helpful to the Golden Boot Team if you have an idea of what you like, or what you have had before, but the choice ultimately comes down the shoes that fit the best, and with an expert opinion you’ll be leaving the store with a big smile.
Well that went too fast. The summer holidays I mean. Time just seems to disappear, and before you know it the kid’s are heading back for a new school year.
We want to make sure you get the most out of this new pair of school shoes, so listen up (or maybe get the kid’s to listen up!) to the next few tips for making the new treads last, and ensuring they’re super comfortable, super quick.
1. When putting school shoes on for the first time after 6 weeks of wearing flip- flops, they’re going to feel uncomfortable. Your feet will have flattened a little and your toes will have separated, meaning a sturdy pair of leather shoes may feel tight at first. Unfortunately, we can’t wear flip-flops to school (or work, might I add) so we suggest wearing them around the house for a bit so you can get used to them.
2. Our shoe styles vary quite a bit. Some times, the heel and ankle collar is cushioned, meaning they’re not going to take too much softening. As the styles get more mature, along with the wearers, the cushioned collar look isn’t so desirable, so they tend to be slimmer and more stiff. This is part of the transition into adult shoe styles and they’re gong to take a little more wearing in.
3. We suggest grabbing some Vaseline or coconut oil, and pressing the back of the heel forward and back with your thumbs. This will essentially do a lot of the wearing in before your feet even touch the ground, reducing the chances of getting nasty blisters.
4. If you’re an older person, and have developed a taste for older person’s shoes, don’t go skidding around playing footy in them. These styles aren’t built to endure that kind of wear. So if you’ve gone ahead and played five-a- side, and they come home scuffed, don’t expect much more than an ‘I told you so’ raised eyebrow! And as for Scooters….!
5. Before wearing them on the first day, give them a good polish and coat of protector spray. This will help to guard against watermarks forming on the leather. Give them another spray now and again after the first wear especially after they’ve been polished!
6. Get your hands on some shoe cream. They come in different colours, as well as a neutral (for all shoe colours), and actually nourish and hydrate the leather when applied. When leather dries out, it will crack and the shoes will wear out a lot quicker. If they’re treated to some leather cream once in a while, it will keep them in tip-top shape for much longer. Just apply a small amount with a cloth all over the shoe. Then with a clean cloth, buff, polish and shine away.
If in doubt, bring them into the shop and we can give them some Golden Boot treatment.
In case you didn’t already know, we stock trainers, plimsolls, football boots and ballet shoes. We don’t work with huge trainer brands, that’s not really our scene, so you won’t see any ticks or shell toes on display. The trainers we do stock however, are leather and are top quality. Would we offer you anything less? Schools love them, they’re comfortable, we can fit them to feet with growing room, and they’re perfectly functional and practical. It also saves a trip to yet another shop.
Oh! One more thing. We sell name tags. Buy name tags. Buy all the name tags…
Happy New Term !!!
The new Spring/Summer season is well and truly upon us and the shop is looking very spring like with new stock from all our leading suppliers, Hispanitas, Wonders and Gabor to name a few. It’s also the time of year for TGB staff to decide on their new staff dress colour for the summer. This year the popular choice is green ! It’s a really versatile colour and blends well with both our core colours black and navy. Work shoe decisions have already been made, and popular choices are…
Coveted in the office by Tracy and Jane is the super stylish 51008 Aloe! Jeans is probably the more sensible choice for work but the monchrome white is proving hard to resist! Both colours come with a matching bag BV50950 which the ideal size for using everyday.
Janie, who is never shy of wearing heels, is adding a touch of glamour to her workwear wardrobe with this very eyecatching design. Janie has been very happily wearing the ‘Orla Dilly’ for autumn/winter and a massive fan of the Clarks x Orla Kiely collection!
Dept manager Jane wears a lot of Wonders and has been more than happy with 3604 Jovita. Comfort and classic styling are what takes Jane back to the Spanish brand, so it’s no surprise she really likes 4710 Montilla. In two neutral colourways with a sturdy block heel, soft patent upper and cushioned footbed, an added bonus for long spells on your feet !
Trudi loves a loafer so the classic shape of 6002 Abona has really appealed to her. And as a big fan of ‘preppy’ styling, Trudi loves the Clarks Hotel Bustle fishermans sandal which she’ll be wearing with capri pants.
There are still new styles to come and sandals to choose for when the sun really shines so new decisions will have to be made. 7605 Arlanza wedge sandal from Wonders comes in three colourways and 51298 Jazmin in tan or 51118 Jazmin in black from Hispanitas both with laser cut detail, are bang on trend for SS15!
With our A/W 14 stock fast flowing in, now is the perfect time to update you with next seasons key trends and give you a sneak preview of the hottest styles we’ve got to offer.
This winter, the classic styling of the Biker and Chelsea boot have made another strong comeback. With oversized and multiple buckle detailing being a predicted key trend for A/W 14, the biker boot is a winter wardrobe must-have. The casual silhouette of the biker and Chelsea boot can be worn with skinny jeans or skirts for a versatile winter outfit.
Our favourites this winter come from Doc Marten and UGG. The UGG Grandale boot with biker influences incorporates their traditional shearling lining for maximum comfort, warmth and style. Doc Marten, in addition to their classic boot, have introduced the Moll Kirin biker boot to their A/W14 collection. The boot features the definitive Goodyear welted sole merged with traditional biker boot buckles.
However, our winter must have is the Kensington Flora Chelsea Boot from Doc Marten. Available in high shine in black and burgundy, the versatile boot from DM can be worn with both formal and casual wear to provide effortless style and comfort.
The Timberland boot has recently grown in popularity to become a key trend this A/W14. Many celebrities have been spotted sporting this trend, including Rita Ora. The 10361 boot from Timberland combines practicality and comfort to revive 1990s looks with outdoor heritage styling.
Androgynous styling combined with masculine tailoring continues to emerge as a key A/W trend. The loafer, brogue and monk strap are this seasons favourites. The Busby range from Clarks offers a fantastic selection of loafers and brogues, perfect for work or college.

“I have been looking for espadrilles like these forever! I’m so happy I found this website. Not everyone can wear 3″-4″ wedges and I’ve been so frustrated that EVERY pair of espadrilles I looked at were either 4″ or flat!!!! These are perfect, fit great-look great and I know as soon as it warms up (if it ever does) I will be living in them this summer.”- Toni Pons ‘Nuria’
“Was very easy to order online and by telephone, and the shoes were delivered very quickly and were exactly like they appeared online. Highly recommend this website.” – Primigi ‘Andes’

“I pondered about using this company as I hadn’t heard of them before but I was so desperate to get my hands on a pair of Toni Pons ( my very favourite summer shoes) I decided to give it a go. The person that I spoke to on the telephone was both charming and helpful so I ordered some shoes. I telephoned the shop at 1.22 pm and had my shoes by 9.05am the next morning. So, I just had to order some more! I had exactly the same efficient experience as before. My only regret is that this could get costly as there are still lots more Toni Pons in colours that I don’t yet have. I have already recommended this shop to friends. ” – Toni Pons ‘Nuria’ and ‘Tremp’
“My wife wanted a pair of house shoes as a present and found them on the Golden Boot site, slightly cheaper than from a competitor, so I ordered them, gift wrapped at no extra cost. She is delighted with them, and I was delighted with the prompt service. The free gift wrapping option was a really nice additional touch. Well be back!”- Nordikas ‘Nicola 305’
“Ordered the boots over the phone and these were despatched quickly and with no fuss. Would purchase again from this company.” – Barbour ‘Readhead’

Mary Jane’s are the ever popular feminine style that have a strap around the ankle to hold the foot in place.
The traditional style is named after a comic strip character who was always pictured in a pair of patent Mary Jane’s. The lovable character appeareared in the famous Buster Brown series that featured in the New York Herald regularly in the early 1900’s.
For our final test we tried our absolute best to crush down the heel cups of each of our school shoes.
For test 5 we thought we would see how our 6 chosen school shoes dealt with extreme temperatures.
Test 4 was designed to show just how much tension the fastenings on your school shoes can handle.
In this test each fastening was pulled by a chain and winch until it snapped.
Here is the video for Test 4-

† DISCLAIMER: Do not attempt to recreate any of the (or similar) actions executed in these videos, these tests were completed in a controlled environment with appropriate safety measures.
In first place with 8/10 we have Clarks Air Surrey, Clarks Dolly Glitz and Startrite Anaconda. All 3 school shoes held out for roughly 25 seconds before their straps snapped.
In Second Place we have Geox Savage which held out for approximately 18 seconds before snapping in two.
In third place we have Startrite Venus, the velcro strap remained attached for 15 seconds before breaking.
And in last place comes the High Street Competitors school shoe, the velcro strap snapped in just 8 seconds.
Test 4 shows just how tough the straps on our school shoes are, they have proved to be more than capable of normal school use. Whether it be a buckle, velcro or lace, our fastenings are built to last.
