Jeffery West – new for spring and summer

Passenger - navy nubuck

Passenger – navy nubuck

Passenger is an eye-catching style available in blue nubuck. The tongue and vamp are entirely woven and the red laces and stitching make a stunning contrast to the Atlantic shade of blue. The toe shape and diamond details makes this Derby lace-up elegant and refined.

Harbour - Mahogany leather

Edge- Mahogany leather

This versatile monk shoe features a double buckle and leather woven vamp. It’s an easy-to-wear style and can be dressed up or down, but certainly does not scrimp on the immaculate details we love.

Horror Show - purple suede

Horror Show – purple suede

Also available in grey, black and brown, Horror Show is no ordinary Chelsea Boot. Made on their new ‘Libertine’ last, it has  an unusual wine glass shaped red gusset and rioja suede back panel. Not forgetting or course, the Devil-Head Goodyear  Welted sole.

Amityville - red

Amityville – red

Not for the feint-hearted – Amityville is a fantastically striking style with plenty of that signature diamond leather punching across the whole shoe. This classic wingtip has truly been given the Jeffery West treatment with their red and white fume leather and exquisite details.

Tiger - burgundy

Tiger – burgundy

From their Goodyear welted collection – Tiger is made up of burgundy suede and mock croc leather. The diamond shape on the front adds that true Jeffery West feel, along with the brass shark’s tooth eyelets.

Mens Summer 2017 New Arrivals

March is an odd inbetweeny time when it comes to footwear. It’s still a bit chilly (I’m holding out for the day to come soon when I don’t have to wear a coat) but the sun is slowly making an appearance. Shop rails are full of brighter colour palettes and those camel chinos are calling. Shoes however, must not be forgotten at this point. Heavy black footwear doesn’t sit right with a spring or summer wardrobe, and why wait for espadrille weather when there is so much choice? Lighter options from the Men’s New Collection are filling the shelves here at Golden Boot.

Our very own Golden Boot Mulgrave is available in blue and dark red. The upper is a supple suede with a punched vamp, the lining is leather and the sole is a sturdy rubber. They’re comfortable, light, and will add just a touch of colour to an everyday outfit.

Golden Boot Reeve is another suede option. This perfect penny loafer will take you from the office to post-work dinner. They come in blue and black (with surprisingly colourful linings) and work well with chinos in spring or shorts in the summer.

Kings of comfort yet again are Pikolinos with their espadrille-style shoe Linares Available in blue or tan, this is ideal for all those family BBQs and beach walks coming up.

Planning a holiday? Grab a pair of Pikolinos. Talking of holidays, Sebago haven’t let us down on the deck shoe front. The quintessentially preppy design is an absolute sell out every summer, and you don’t even have to own your own boat to wear a pair.

If you’re on the go all weekend, then take a look at Nebula A from Geox. The breathable sole unit has been designed specifically with your super active feet in mind.

They come in charcoal or navy suede and have flexible elastic straps across the front, making them comfortable and practical.

For more formal occasions check out Tucano from Anatomic Gel. They come in various colours and are well-known and loved for their comfort and practicality. Little details like the contrasted stitching and laces make them a great addition to a smart spring outfit, and being a leather brogue, they’re transferable from season to season.

If you’re heading out out, and really want to make a statement, then who else do we talk about other than Jeffery West? Harbour has just landed in the store – a beautiful Derby wingtip as part of their Goodyear Welted collection.

They feature a woven leather vamp and tongue, a red leather insole, embossed leather sole and those signature diamond punches on the edges and toe box. If you’re feeling extra showy then go bold with the aptly named Flash.

Stylish Winter Boots

Be prepared for those blustery November days with a solid pair of boots. This season’s colour palettes and detail trends broaden across both the men and women’s department, with deep reds, burgundy, and warm shades of brown and exquisite attention to detail.

Although traditionally used in men’s footwear, women don’t have to miss out on those classic last shapes and brogue detailing anymore. Wonders have given us a statement ankle boot in black and cherry red, with a chunky sole and an easy-to-slip-on zip on the inside.

The colour combinations in the Barker womens collection are more than eye-catching. This blue and red pair have been disappearing off shelves since the moment they arrived, and with a decent suede brush you can keep these looking good as new.

Pikolinos have been experimenting with their mens collection using Vibram’s recycled Ecostep sole unit, it’s hard wearing with a soft leather upper and inside zip – a great option for everyday wear as its super comfy.

Loake has offered a stocky tan leather ankle boot, with wonderful brogue detailing and that ever-classic Goodyear Welted sole. These guys will last a lifetime, and will only look and feel better with age. Pictured here, Christian wears them loosely laced with trousers tucked behind the tongue for a more casual feel.

Red Wing is another chunky member of the autumn collection. Handmade in Minnesota, USA, these boots are born out of workwear and are super tough.  They’ve gone for a deep red wine shade upper, black laces and statement white exposed stitching.

Cheaney haven’t missed out on those red wine shades this season. They’ve combined it with a darker shaded winged tip and smart black sole unit, to make the ideal pair to travel from work to dinner.

The classics are classics for a reason. They last a lifetime and never look out dated. Barker is a great go-to brand for the ever-loved brogue. If you’re feeling bold search online for Haig, McClean or Jackson, and if you want some expert advice, ask a member of our men’s department team. You can find out more from them about how to keep them in tip-top condition too.

Helen’s Happy School Memories of Lumpy Custard, Break-Time Milk and Woolly Tights…

Memories from my first few years at school are few and far between. There are small details I’ll never forget, however. The feeling of those thick, itchy, woolen tights will never leave my legs. The limited selection of un-chewed HB pencils, picking fluff off duffle coats, the elation at being allowed on to the field at lunchtime, stringy green beans and lumpy custard, miscellaneous meat, break-time milk, hymns, desk trays.

My school picture!

My school picture!

The list goes on. Fleeting memories of wonderful feelings like getting a brand new exercise book and writing your name on the front in the best possible hand-writing (inevitably, by trying, I always messed it up)

I remember one pair of shoes in primary school. They were from The Golden Boot. Obviously. Probably when the shop looked more like this…

old shop blog 5They were black leather, t-bar, with a cut out in the centre front, on the loop. They came with a tiny sheet of tiny, shiny stickers. These stickers could be placed underneath the cutout creating ‘a whole new look’. I remember at least five or six other girls in my class having the same ones and we would compare sticker choices on a daily basis. Star, heart or crown? Life’s decisions have changed somewhat since then.

The beginning of September was nearing, and a trip to town was imminent. Smith’s for colouring pencils. Long gone are the days of ‘colouring in’ being considered work. BHS for socks and the boys’ shirts. Then off to Gabriel’s Hill for shoes. ‘Can I wear them now?’ I’d ask. ‘You’ll ruin them’ was the answer.

The evening before the first day of a new term, I’d set out my uniform. I can still see my new shoes sat patiently by my bedside table. I’d put my new pencils in my pencil case, and organize my school bag (not that it ever stayed like that for long), and I’d lie in bed, eagerly anticipating the following day. The anticipation didn’t last long either once I realised I had to do it every day for the next 12 years…

During this Back To School period we’re all reflecting on our school days. It’s fascinating hearing different stories from the various generations of people who work here. Plus, the photos are hilarious.

RM Williams Boots at Golden Boot

In 1932, Mr. Reginald Murray Williams handcrafted his first pair of leather shoes.

RM_Williams_BootsMade from one piece of leather, with a single seam at the back, they’re made the
same way today through over 80 hand-held processes in the factory in Adelaide, Australia.

The design concept came from a desire to create a boot that could endure long, exhausting days in the unforgiving Australian outback. These are built to last and are always made by hand with the finest leathers and goodyear welting.

Despite not being in the Australian outback, they’ve become one of those iconic brands at the Golden Boot. Although having a broader, more varied customer than Jeffery West, they have a certain feel about them, and a surprising versatility.

I’d imagine them on the feet of a check shirt and battered jeans wearing man. As the heat rises and the dust settles, the deep-set creases in his brow tell tales of long days and endless nights. His hands as tough as his old RM Williams boots…but apparently, city dudes love these too. The stories are more train station, court-room or building site based, but they’re loved all the same.

Our collection includes the Comfort Craftsman, and Stockyard boots. They come in various leathers and suede, and look great with basically everything. In the 40s and 50s, RM Williams introduced a range of clothing, some of which we stock in the shop too. Choose from classic shirts, plaited belts, wallets, wash bags, socks and leather after-care products. Pay us a visit and take home your own piece of Australia!

Our very own Ed, who holds the fort at Golden Boot and loves any DIY project he can get his hands on, swears by his Stockyard boots.

They really have been through the wars, and made it through the huge project, that was building a new women’s department, and they’re only now starting to get a little tired. Fear not though Ed! RM Williams offer a repair service. They’ll  be sent back for them to be re-soled, re-stitched and re-buffed, ready for them to ‘be sent back into the world by the hands that made them’. How ideal! Check out the videos to find out more, although I challenge you not to read the rest of this blog in an Australian accent if you do…

This is the Comfort Craftsman in mid-brown suede.

It has a rubber sole and two pull tugs, making them easy to slip on and off. The cushioned microfiber inner sole make them ultra comfortable and breathable, and this pair comes with a free suede brush, so you can keep them in tip-top shape.

This other style is the Craftsman ‘Yearling’ boot.

Crafted in the same shape, but made with a classic leather sole, these guys are timeless, sleek and super smart.

They also come with a tin of Stockman’s polish, as that leather needs some love. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ll mention it again. And as an added bonus, there’s FREE UK delivery on all RM Williams boots ! The team in the men’s department at GB really know their stuff, and if you’re concerned about fitting, then pop in, have a coffee and a chat and try a few pairs on.

Until next time…mate.

Jeffery West – Wild Child

Jeffery_WestMark Jeffery and Guy West. Two childhood friends with a vision of creating astoundingly unique footwear. With an upbringing enshrouded in the shoe-making history of Northampton, these guys went from re-purposing end-of- line shoes to developing a brand that has now gone state-side.

After years of not being taken seriously, Jeffery-West was established and founded in 1987, and encapsulates both the antiquity of the Northampton shoe and leather industries, and their unrelenting innovation and creativity.

At first, one may only see the brightly coloured leather, the boldy-shaped diamond punching…

The skull-wielding women on the lining and the last shapes so long and pointy they could take your eye out. Look harder. These shoes have not forgotten their history. The lines are sleek and classic, the quality of production is second to none, and the attention to detail is impeccable.

Don’t mistake the flamboyance for ignorance; these boys know their stuff, and their passion is woven into every single stitch; elegance meets cutting edge design. Time old craftsmanship shakes hands with innovation.

You only have to take a peek at their website  to understand what Jeffery-West are about. Black and white images of soirees and stocking adorned women are matched with red, gothic text, and we haven’t even mentioned the canes or spankers…oops. Too late…They do offer other extras (easy now) such as wallets, umbrellas, gloves, belts, socks and coloured laces, each depicting that signature Jeffey-West  style and attitude.

Talking of style and attitude, I was lucky enough to have a chat with Sharon, from the men’s department. I’m sure she was thrilled to have me chasing her around the shop with a notebook on a busy Saturday morning…(sorry!) but she knows all there is to know about these shoes and her customers. The moment you step into the menswear shop, the neo-gothic display can’t help but catch your eye. It’s intriguing, fascinating.

It lures you in with a perfectly manicured ‘come hither’ hand gesture. I mean, these shoes. They’re sexy!

Something Sharon has picked up on is how a pair of these shoes can change a man. She compares it to how some women feel when they put on a brand new pair of killer heels.

These guys stand up, check themselves out in the mirror and the shoulders go back, the chest puffs out a little, chin is raised, and the next thing they know they’re striding out of the shop into the high street beyond with a Golden Boot bag in hand and a few extra stamps on their loyalty card.

Sharon explained that Jeffery-West is about more than the shoes themselves. This is a lifestyle. Various last shapes have been named after famous influencers. Keith Richards, Steve Marriot, Terence Stamp, Oliver Reed, Peter O-Toole, Brian Jones, Jarvis Cocker, Bryan Ferry, Roger Moore…the list goes on! The design inspiration is derived from Victorian and Gothic architecture, biker gangs and flamboyant, verging on bizzare rogues throughout history.

I imagine many of the customers to be the same. Not that any of you are bizzare, but I wonder whether there is a certain characteristic that creates a desire to purchase a pair I imagine many of the customers to be the same.

An eye and appreciation for detail is a must. The tiny skull head zippers, and intricate diamond punching cannot go unseen. From the heel shape to the sole engraving, everything has been exquisitely considered.

A certain poise is necessary, and a nod to their historical context is of most importance. They’re obviously a talking point so one must be prepared to answer questions…especially if you’re carrying a cane…

A story to be continued but if you can’t wait visit Jeffery West at Golden Boot and choose your favourite design from our complete selection of Jeffery West boots, shoes and belts all with FREE UK next day delivery*

Must Have Summer Flats

As I mentioned last week, I gave up on high heels a long time ago. I wore them for my graduation ceremony, and swore an oath to my feet that I would never again attempt the London underground in a pair.

I’m lucky enough to be in a job where I don’t need to wear them, I’m not a going OUT out kind of girl, and if I’m ever at a party or wedding then all I want to do is dance. I’m uncontrollable when my jam comes on and let’s face it, I’m not the type to be stumbling around like a newly born foal trying to boogie only using my top half…..So flats are the answer.

Whilst at school I had a headmaster who insisted that the female members of sixth form wore heels to ensure they looked ‘smart’. I was all too quick to point out that it is in fact, the 21 st Century, and although flat shoes back then weren’t always the most attractive, we needed to cart the same number of books from class to class as our male co-learners and… I think I made my point…there is now, however, a huge selection of super smart FLAT shoes that are comfortable, fashionable and don’t make your toes bleed. Here are a few of ours from this season…

First up we have Wonders, a beautiful Spanish brand introduced last week. 3152 Tormes is available in black and taupe and is the sweetest summer shoe. The t-bar brings back memories of traditional school schoes, and the patent leather faux reptile print with cut-out detail adds a contemporary feel.

Wonders 3152 Tormes in Black and Taupe £97.50

Wonders 3152 Tormes in Black and Taupe £97.50

It has the tiniest of heels (1.5cm), just enough to give a little lift and the adjustable buckle ensures they fit like a dream. Easy to walk in and very elegant. In black, they’d be great for the office, and the neutral taupe would go well with 50s style cropped trousers or a pencil skirt.

Wonders 3152 Tormes in Black £97.50

When it comes to a slip-on loafer, Pikolinos have got this one,W5G-3569 Royal. It’s all about the small details. The top line has a tiny fringe all the way around and the front section has a mesh-like laser cut-out feature with a bold leather band and those timeless tassels.

Pikolinos W5G-3569 Royal £89.99

Pikolinos W5G-3569 Royal £89.99

The streak of yellow along the sole unit brings them to life and the leather upper and lining will embrace your feet throughout those long days. They’re available in demin and brandy. Slip on your favourite pair of skinny jeans, a crisp white shirt and grab your Wayfarers.

Pikolinos W5G-3569 Royal £89.99

Pikolinos W5G-3569 Royal £89.99

There was a time when I thought full fringes belonged on the golf course. Shoe fringes that is. This delicate number have changed my mind. They would look lovely on the golf course, but they’d also look stunning at a wedding reception, in a resteraunt or stood in line at a swanky bar.

Hispanitas have done it again. 62497 Florencia , in jeans and new shade white, features only the heel and toe of the shoe, making it oh so fancy. 62497 Florencia  is available in a limited range of  sizes so make sure you don’y miss out!

Hispanitas 62497 Florencia in Jeans £95.00 and Hispanitas BV62946 bag in Jeans £155.00

Hispanitas 62497 Florencia in Jeans £95.00 and Hispanitas BV62946 bag in Jeans £155.00

The pointed toe looks polished and refined and the tiny buckle on the front adds a pretty point of interest. The cushioned sole and a small elastic grip guarantee comfort and walkability.

Hispanitas 62497 Florencia in Jeans £95.00 and Hispanitas BV62946 bag in Jeans £155.00

Hispanitas 62497 Florencia in Jeans £95.00 and Hispanitas BV62946 bag in Jeans £155.00

I remember when ballet pumps came into fashion. Everyone wore them and they were completely flat, with a drastic and unflatteringly low top line. I think they might have been predominantly constructed of cardboard, as they seemed to just dissolve at the first hint of rain drops. Those days are long gone, but leather shoes do need looking after. Use a good protector spray on them to keep the colour looking fresh and treat them to some leather cream every now and again to make sure they’re kept soft and supple.
