“The apparent certainty of my teenage years when if you had size eleven feet you would fit into any size eleven shoe or boot have long since gone. Therefore, some years ago, after trying on numerous pairs of numerous brands of walking boots, it was no surprise to find the most comfortable pair turned out to be a size 13 Merrell.
Those boots put in sterling service and when it came time to replace them, and in the middle of a pandemic when I wasn’t able to go out and try boots on for size and comfortableness, I naturally just wanted the same again. What naivety! A web search revealed that of course that particular boot isn’t available any more. There followed a period of mourning accompanied by a feeling I might have to stick with my plastic bag inserts for some time to come, before I eventually pulled myself together and returned, although reluctantly, to the web. After hours of eye-straining searching I came across a pair of size 13 Merrell boots that looked like my old pair. I am not of the generation that can order on-line knowing nothing of the credentials of the advertiser, nor if the information being displayed is accurate or not. So I decided to phone the retailer bracing myself for the inevitable multiple choice of button pressing followed by half an hour of insipid musak, and then a voice that could be a machine but is actually a human trained to talk like a machine that obviously wishes they were somewhere else (that is the machine or the human).
But it wasn’t like that! ‘The Golden Boot’ knows what customer service actually means and it was an unexpected pleasure to realise I was speaking to a ‘real’, ‘I enjoy by job’, person. After that, the fact the boots arrived before I could put the phone down, and that they fit, and are almost like my old ones (but without plastic bag inserts), was just a bonus! Thank you everyone. And for those interested in my particular style of Merrell boot, they do not appear on the official Merrell web site so happy searching!”
