The Story Of The Esapdrille.

Each year, as Spring chips away at the Winter chill, our thoughts turn to packing away the weatherproof footwear and slipping into something altogether more elegant. It’s a time when the espadrille comes into it’s own.

Characterised by their jute soles, espadrilles have a long history dating all the back to the 14th century, with soldiers during the Spanish Civil War being sent into conflict wearing canvas upper espadrilles.

Our Toni Pons  Spring / Summer 2015 season has kicked off really well with the ever popular  Ter (left) and Nuria (right) selling at rate of knots. Both designs feature the classic jute sole and are available in a colour palette of bright and neutral shades.

This led to one of the world’s most famous espadrille manufacturers, Castaner, being nationalised as the shoes were regarded as a product of military interest. Post-war, the traditional espardrilles were adopted by Hollywood A-listers such as Grace Kelly, Cary Grant and Jackie Onassis.
