Test 2 – The Sole Gind Test

Test 2 – The Sole Gind Test

Test 2 at The Golden Boot Lab was designed to test the soles of our school shoes to their limits.

For Test 2 we marked a yellow spot on the sole of each shoe and used an angle grinder for 10 seconds to see how much damage we could achieve.

Here is our video showing The Sole Grind Test.

The soles of your school shoes really have to put up with a lot and so Clarks, Startrite and Geox work very hard to make sure that their sole units are durable and hard wearing.

In Joint first place for test 2 with a mark of 7 out of 10 we have Bootleg Air Surrey, Clarks Dolly Glitz and Startrite Anaconda.

The sole of Bootleg Air Surrey coped with the angle grinder very well. It wore down a thin layer of the sole but not enough to cause any major damage to the construction of the shoe.

Clarks Dolly Glitz has a lightweight and streamline sole so we initially thought that the style wouldn’t perform too well in this task but it proved us wrong. The popular girls school shoe survived the 10 seconds of angle grinding and minimal damage occurred to the sole.

Startrite Anaconda did extremely well in test 2. We have found that this startrite sole unit copes very well with everyday wear and this test confirmed this for us. You can see that the top layer of black has rubbed away to reveal the red layer beneath. This hard wearing boy’s school shoe really proved it’s worth in this second test.

In joint second place for The Sole Grind test we have Geox Savage and Startrite Venus.

Geox Savage is always popular because it is lightweight and flexible like a trainer. The Geox sole unit uses patented breathable technology and actually has tiny holes in it to allow sweat out of the shoe but still the shoe’s sole unit performed very well in this test. You can see that the angle grinder has been able to work a slightly deeper groove into the sole than the three shoes that take 1st place.

For a lightweight Mary Jane style Startrite Venus did very well on test 2. The 10 seconds obviously worked quite a groove into the sole but still did not break through to the interior section of the shoe. You can see that this Startrite shoe would cope very well with normal everyday wear if it coped with the sole grind test.

And in last place, yes you guessed it, it’s the competitor’s Velcro school shoe. Test 2 really showed how weak and thin the sole unit of this shoe is. The angle grinder quickly worked a hole through the sole’s waffle construction and you can see right through to the inside of the school shoe.
